I first studied chemistry at UC Santa Cruz, particularly attracted to quantum mechanics and molecular dynamics. Two summers in the ‘detonation theory and applications’ group at Los Alamos National Laboratory introduced me to the beauties of scientific research and the Southwestern U.S. However, after graduating from UCSC it became apparent that I knew nothing about how to brew beer or anything else remotely practical, so I figured I should get a real job. I then spent 4 years in Colorado working as an environmental consultant, measuring smoke stack emissions and operating computer models. 

After running out of things to learn, I obtained a Ph.D. in meteorology from The Pennsylvania State Universtiy, studying atmospheric photochemistry from airplanes and towers. Back in Colorado as a postdoctoral researcher at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, I made more measurements from aircraft, probing marine clouds and turbulent mixing. Now an associate professor at UC Davis, my research group investigates how trace gas emissions in marine and terrestrial boundary layers mix, disperse, and ultimately influence the Earth's climate.
